Description

Tolkien explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the “fellowship” apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.

I have no idea if the story is accurate, but I WANT it to be. You see how all the influences come into his life. I know he refuted it, but it is impossible to consider the imagery of LOTR’s battle scenes without thinking they were inspired by war in the industrial revolution, and how machines changed warfare. This movie is beautiful and heartfelt. Could not love it more.
  • Superb biopic

This film is the best biopic ever made. The script brilliantly creates a portrait of Tolkien as a young man beginning to form his imaginative world. The acting is wonderful, and the depiction of Geoffrey as a gay man in love with Tolkien is courageous and deeply moving.

"Nothing can beat childhood", answered García Márquez when asked why he didn't write the second half of his autobiography. This movie is about Tolkien's childhood and youth, and how the experiences he lived as an orphan boy, specially his experiences of friendship and love, shaped his own mythology. Its a great, emotional story. You won't regret watching it. P.d.: And for the moros who asked about C. S. Lewis, they didn't met in Tolkien's childhood or youth, they met years later.

Someone else below mentioned this, but why on earth is C.S. Lewis not a character? So odd.

watched it on a date night with my husband. We both loved it. I don't know about Tokein's life so I'm not sure how the movie deviates from the truth. Regardless, it was a beautiful movie!

The film didn’t go too much in depth. Tried to mask it with few primitive effects/moments.

Very touching story about his life which helped me to understand why he wrote so many great stories!
  • CS Lewis obliterated from story

Not one word about CS Lewis's great influence on Tolkien, or their deep friendship. Typical Hollywood rewriting of history. Very dissapointing.
